Frequently Asked Questions
What is a full spectrum doula?
A full spectrum doula provides physical and emotional support to you and your partner during pregnancy, childbirth, the postpartum period, and can help guide you through all reproductive events.
Is a doula the same thing as a midwife?
No, a doula does not provide any medical or nursing care. This allows doulas to provide complete care, attention, and support to the birthing person.
Does a doula replace the birth partner?
A doula doesn’t replace anyone. A doula is another member of the birth team and supports everyone in their own role. A doula’s presence helps the partner or support person participate at their own comfort level, showing them how and when to use various comfort techniques. People often find it helpful to share the support responsibilities with someone more experienced and in turn can enjoy the birth experience more.
Can a doula support a birthing person with an epidural?
Yes, a doula can support a birthing person no matter what type of pain management they may decide to use. The presence of a doula during early labor and during the epidural placement process can be extremely helpful as they can support their client with staying calm and relaxed during medical procedures.
Can a doula attend C-Section births?
Yes, a person having a C-section birth can still hire a doula for support. The doula may or may not be in the operating room, depending on the wishes of the family and the medical staff, but the doula is still there for the new parent once they are recovering.
How do I find the right doula?
You will want to make sure that you feel safe, comfortable, and trusting of your doula when going through the hiring process. This person will be guiding you through the last few weeks of your pregnancy, into birth, and during the postpartum period so it is important that your energies match. I believe there is a doula out there for every type of person. To find the best doula for you, start with researching, asking for referrals, interviewing multiple doulas, and asking questions that are important to you!
When should I hire a doula?
It is never too early to hire a doula! The ideal time to hire one is 5-6 months before your estimated due date, but it is never too late in your pregnancy to consider hiring a doula either. Most doulas book early and quickly so it is encouraged to do research on doulas in your area and meet with them for a consultation.
What are the benefits of hiring a birth doula?
Studies have shown that continuous support from doulas during childbirth may:
Decrease medical intervention in labor
Reduce need for c-section
Reduce use of pain medication
Decrease in the length of labor
Decrease in negative childbirth experiences
